By the way Len'en games are free, just thought that'd be nice to know

Main Post: By the way Len'en games are free, just thought that'd be nice to know

Top Comment: Some answers to the imagined FAQ of my mind before we continue. No the characters aren't nonbinary. However, JynX (the creator) did say you can imagine them as any gender you want, so feel free to imagine them as nonbinary (as long as you don't force your headcanons onto other people). Yes our plural character sucks in terms of rep (not sure I need to tell you why someone would have a problem with "character with multiple personalities wants very badly to murder someone"), and it's perfectly understandable if you don't wanna get into the series for that reason. (Their main redeeming quality is that they're all onboard with the murder thing and the two personalities we've seen the most of have funny arguments, both about how to execute the murder thing and various petty shit.) No the games aren't balanced that well, but only the Touhou fans here will have any idea what a well-balanced bullet hell game is supposed to look like so why not play it anyway? No Len'en isn't a Touhou fangame, it was inspired by Touhou and has many differences from Touhou. To the Touhou fans, whenever some Len'en fans say something like "Omg Len'en has more lore than Touhou", they generally mean "Omg Len'en has a serialized plot where lore gets revealed" (as opposed to Touhou having a more episodic plot where lore gets revealed), please don't be too harsh on them. Len'en OST slaps. However, please don't listen with the volume too high. You will get jumpscared by trumpets (this applies more to the older OST, but considering how long BPoHC has been out, I'm counting it among the older OST despite being the most recent full release).

Bullet Hell games similar to Touhou, Seihou, Len'en, etc?

Main Post:

I come before Reddit today, as my furious googling of nearly five minutes did not yield any satisfactory results.

I am a huge fan of the Touhou Project. I love the design, the setting, the characters, the music and all the fan works it has spawned. Most of all, I love the games themselves. I have played every Touhou bullet hell game and have even managed to 1cc them all on normal (except SoEW and UFO). Going off from Touhou I got attracted to Len'en and enjoyed those games as well (a great little series, if a bit of an unpolished diamond). There's a wealth of Touhou fangames as well... though I'm really lazy and have not had the energy to go through the effort to make them work on my computer (locale settings, compatibility hopping and translation patches make me lose interest). I even tried Shuusou Gyoku, but couldn't get it to run properly.

Those things are all well and good and they exist, but I want to know if there's more games out there that are similar to the Touhou Project style of bullet hell. Now, I know that other bullet hell games are out there. I know of Cave and Ikaruga and whatnot. However, what I want is something a bit more specific.

Some of the requirements I want from these games I'm looking for are more specific, some are a little more vague. These are:

  • Vertical screen. This means that the character is on the bottom and the enemies and bullets come from the top. This is the superior bullet hell orientation, as it's the most intuitive. Also, I'd prefer a "portrait"-proportioned screen to a "landscape" one (taller than it's wide).
  • Tight controls. And I can't stress this enough. The controls must be tighter than the base of Mount Everest. When I move, the character or whatever must move in a clear and predictable way, otherwise my stupid brain can't dodge a damn thing.
  • Focus mechanic. You know what that means. Hold key XYZ to move slower. If you don't know why this exists in bullet hells, try Story of Eastern Wonderland. You won't enjoy it.
  • My hitbox should be clearly defined, preferably visible. It doesn't have to be visible, but at least I should know where it is. Also, it should be the size of an actual bullet hell hitbox, i.e. a pixel in the middle of your sprite.
  • The entire horizontal screen should be visible at all times. This turned me off Cave games. If I can't see where the bullet is coming from in Mushihimesama, how am I supposed to dodge it?
  • The bullet waves (or barrages, or danmaku) should be clear and recognizable. This turned me off the Ikaruga demo. It felt like stuff was just happening around me while I had no idea what was going on. I don't want that.
  • The danmaku shouldn't just be random shit flying my way. There must be some human design in the phases/spellcards/etc.
  • The danmaku shouldn't just be a tightly-packed wall of death which I have to micrododge like I'm playing Lunatic. Junko is no fun at all. I don't want a game consisting solely of Junko.
  • The graphics should be crisp and clean. The screen ought not be too busy. I want to be able to focus on the three things that matter: my hitbox, the enemies, and the bullets.
  • Good music. Good music makes all games more enjoyable.

I don't know if these are harsh requirements or not. I would appreciate if you could help me find games at least somewhat similar to what I've laid out here. Thank you for your time.

Top Comment: Blue Revolver: You need to go into the settings to activate hitbox visibility and be aware that "Rapid Fire" in the controls means "Fire while moving rapidly", but it fits all the criteria. Crimzon Clover World Ignition: This game's focus key is overloaded with an omnidirectional lock-on attack. The screen is a little busy, but good visual design lets you easily tune out non-hazards. While it may have horizontal scrolling, offscreen enemies can't shoot. Just keep a closer eye on your hitbox than usual to overcome enemies that appear low on the screen because of horizontal scrolling. (This also works in Cave games.)

Any chance they will add Len to the game in the future

Unlikely as they really want to focus on the remake and we don't have anyone from classic Melty (not even Sion who is literally the protagonist) but I guess time will tell. I hope she comes back though.

Len's island type games

Main Post:

Well I've played a good 20 hrs on len's island and after that the game gets pretty empty. idk. There's not much to do apart for building a nice house/farm. The dungeons are cool but again, they feel pretty empty. I actually really like the game/genere.. Do you guys know any good games such as len's island but richer? more polished? Thanks a lot guys, I'll appreciate every suggestion.
